Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh Announces Candidacy for State Senate

Kavanagh, who currently represents the 74th Assembly District, is running to succeed Daniel Squadron in 26th Senate District

Kavanagh: ”I am running to fight for our great communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn and create the progressive, reform-minded Senate that New Yorkers deserve.”

New York, NY - Today, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh announced his candidacy for the 26th District of the New York State Senate, which includes lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Kavanagh currently represents the 74th Assembly District in Manhattan from the Lower East Side up to East Midtown, and is running to succeed Senator Daniel Squadron.

“I am running for State Senate to fight for our communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn and create the progressive, reform-minded Senate that New Yorkers deserve,” said Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh. “For 11 years in the Assembly, I have advocated for my constituents and stood up when government in Albany has failed to function as it should. As a State Senator, I will fight for the things that matter to New Yorkers: strengthening rent laws and preserving affordable housing, increasing access to quality schools, safeguarding the environment, promoting economic and social justice, preventing violence in our communities, and creating a fairer and more accessible political process.”

Kavanagh authored some of the most important bills in the Assembly to strengthen the rent laws and expanded tax breaks to freeze rents and keep housing affordable for seniors and people with disabilities. He helped lead the successful effort to ban the environmentally destructive practice of drilling for gas known as “fracking.” One of New York’s leading champions of reform, Kavanagh is an outspoken advocate for changing the culture in Albany, fixing New York’s broken election and campaign finance systems, and standing up to special interests.

As a leader in the fight against gun violence, Kavanagh founded and spearheaded both national and state coalitions of legislators committed to preventing gun violence and advocating for policies and programs that keep our communities safe. He was a leader in the effort to pass the NY SAFE Act, and has persistently supported the strong laws that have contributed to New York having one of the lowest rates of gun deaths in the country.

Kavanagh is currently the Chair of the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection, where he successfully advocated for increased consumer protection legislatively and in the State budget.
